Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) moved into the lead of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup after a hard-fought solo win in Plzen. Temperatures just above freezing point and a muddy technical course were the main ingredients for a day of ‘cross spectacle.
Cyclo-cross races last approximately one hour and are held on technical and hilly circuits of 2.5-3.5 km. Cyclo-cross provides a real education in cycling as it requires accomplished bike handling skills. (Full event replay)

The UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung will get under way in Colombia on October 13th. A regular World Cup host, the city of Cali is building up to even greater things: it has been awarded the 2014 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. (Full event replay)
Unlike the other road races in the week, which all take part on the 16.5km circuit, the men’s event starts in Maastricht and winds for 100km around Limburg before entering the circuit. The riders will complete 10 laps of the circuit, totaling 265km.
The men’s elite time trial takes place on the Wednesday, September 19th. Starting in Heerlen, which hosted the 1967 Worlds, it covers 45.7km and features three main climbs, the toughest of which is the first in Simpelveld.
The Elite Women’s Individual Time Trial runs a distance of 129km. Sources say Britain’s Emma Pooley is sure to attack on the Cauberg – but the extra 1.7km to the line makes Marianne Vos the predicted favorite. (Full event replay)
The action continues with the flying 200m qualifying round of the women’s individual sprint featuring Anna Meares and Victoria Pendleton, the women’s team pursuit, women’s points race, the men’s kilometre time trial and first rounds of the men’s omnium competition.
