The Volta a Catalunya is a popular road bicycle race held annually in Catalonia, Spain. It is a part of the UCI World Tour program, ranking second behind the Vuelta a España in popularity for Spain. The Volta a Catalunya is the fourth-oldest cycling stage race in the world (first time in 1911), only behind the Tour de France (1903), Tour of Belgium (1908) and the Giro d’Italia (1909).
It was Thomas De Gendt (Vacansoleil-dcm) who grabbed the win at the finish, but Daniel Martin (Garmin Sharp) walked away with GC glory. Martin finished with a total time of 29:02:25 and is the first Irishman to win this event since 1986.
Simon Gerrans (Orica Greenedge) won with a time of 3:55:46. Gerrans was sitting in 8th place going into the final 500m and manage to pass everyone for the finish. Daniel Martin (Garmin Sharp) leads the GC.
