Run As One: Director Irene Davis, Spaulding National Running Center

As Director of the Spaulding National Running Center, Irene Davis was volunteering at a medical tent near the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon. Immediately after the explosions, the tent became a mass casualty center. Irene now uses that first-hand experience at the center to help patients address the new issues they face in understanding how to learn to walk and run again. The center also helps to retrain those who have lost a limb, and was the home to several bombing victims during their rehabilitation.

Dani Holmes-Kirk was never a fan of running and yet is training for her second Boston Marathon. Since starting running she has lost 64lbs and now considers herself to have caught the running “bug.”

Run As One: Eric Goralnick, Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Dr. Eric Goralnick, an emergency room doctor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, was a block away from the marathon when he learned about the bombing.  By the time he arrived at the ER, the staff was already in motion. The hospital’s personnel regularly undergo drills and training for emergency events, and on that fateful day, put all of their practice into play. This year, Dr. Goralnick plans to support the hospital’s team and honor those who were injured in last year’s bombings by running the 2014 Boston Marathon.

For the second year running, Hong Kong will welcome a record 28 teams to the Sevens. This year’s Sevens will play host to the HSBC Sevens World Series (HSBC SWS) competition amongst the 15 core teams on the Series and Asia’s third-ranked side Sri Lanka, and a simultaneous 12-team international qualifier competition, the winner of which will be promoted to the HSBC SWS in 2014/2015.

2014 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships: Copenhagen, Denmark

This will be the 20th edition of the championships (including the two editions that were renamed the ‘IAAF World Road Running Championships’) and Denmark is the 16th country to host the World Half Marathon Championships. The event is being held in Scandinavia for just the second time ever, 20 years after Oslo hosted it. It’s also just the second time in the history of the championships that it is being held in spring. Brussels in 2002 was the only other World Half Marathon Championships that was held at this time of year.

Run As One: Dr. David R. King, Marathon Runner & Surgeon

Dr. David R. King runs to share in the personal victories of his fellow marathoners and had just finished running the 2013 Boston Marathon when the bombs went off. Little did he know that his experience as an Army doctor in Iraq and Afghanistan would be put to the test in his own backyard. Upon hearing of the blasts, he immediately went to Massachusetts General Hospital where he began treating and operating on patients. Dr. King plans to run the 2014 Boston Marathon.
