Coming in September is “Bikenado” – A Month of Cycling Events From Around the Globe
Los Angeles (August 21, 2013) – Universal Sports Network will air 84 hours of exclusive LIVE multiplatform coverage of Spain’s premier cycling event, the 2013 Vuelta a España, beginning this Saturday, August 24, at 1 PM ET. LIVE coverage of the remaining 20 stages of the third and final Grand Tour of the season continues daily at 10 AM ET starting on Sunday, August 25 throughout the three week race. The 68th edition of La Vuelta will air both on-air and online at Universal Sports.com to authenticated users.
In addition to the 2013 Vuelta a España, Universal Sports presents a robust schedule of world-class cycling events from around the globe in September as part of its “Bikenado” programming. Launching a month-long, daily onslaught of cycling this Labor Day weekend are the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in South Africa followed by the Grand Prix de Plouay, Tour of Alberta, Tour of Britain and the Grand Prix of Wallonie. Capping an exciting month of cycling events is 2013 Interbike, an original show that will take bike enthusiasts inside the industry’s largest trade show for an inside look at the latest trends and technologies. “Bikenado” wraps up with the UCI Road Cycling World Championships in Florence, Italy, featuring both the men’s and women’s elite time trials and road racing events.
Universal Sports coverage of the 2013 Vuelta a España, presented by Yurbuds, will follow some of the world’s best cyclists on a mountainous course across Spain beginning Saturday, August 24, with the team time-trials commencing from a barge off the inlets of Galicia, and culminating Sunday, September 15, in the capital city of Madrid, per tradition. In addition, Universal Sports will present recap shows at 10 AM ET on both rest days, September 3 and 10, and following all 21 stages at 12 PM on September 21. In addition to daily LIVE coverage, the network will also present primetime re-airs of each stage daily.
The year’s race is seemingly wide-open with a strong field of riders seeking to claim the coveted red jersey. Sure to be a favorite in his home country is 2013 Tour de France and 2012 Vuelta podium finisher Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha Team), who is seeking his first Grand Tour title in a race perfectly suited to his known climbing abilities. Other strong contenders scheduled for this year’s race include 2013 Giro d’Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), 2006 and 2010 Giro champ Ivan Basso (Cannondale), 2009 Vuelta winner Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and American Chris Horner (RadioShack-Leopard-Trek).
The network’s broadcast team will feature veteran announcer Steve Schlanger on play-by-play alongside analyst Todd Gogulski, who spent more than a decade racing professionally, including on the U.S. National team, and had more than 100 victories during his career.
