In the 2012 Rugby Sevens World Series in Las Vegas, the only event of the Series to take place in the USA, underdog Samoa took down the heavily favored New Zealand 26-19 with a try on the final play of the final game. With the score tied at 19-19 and the game looking like it was headed to extra time, Samoan Alafoti Faosiliva scored from the right side in the final moments of the match to clinch the Cup title. The Samoan fans, who were abundant in Las Vegas, flowed onto the field to celebrate the unprecedented victory.
“My favorite moment of the year was the final game of the Sevens World Series in Las Vegas because three full days of rugby came down to one final score with the clock already run out to double zero. Although it was awesome to see the seventh-place team upset the first-place team, who was going for three straight victories, the best part was the group of fans from Samoa who rushed the field afterwards.”
