Team USA sent three entries to 2012 Cup of China, the third ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating event of the season, and each of them earned a fourth place finish in Shanghai this weekend.

In the ladies event, Mirai Nagasu, who opened her season with a third-place finish at Finlandia Trophy, finished in fourth place with a total competition score of 163.46 points. She skated to the third best short program on Friday and earned the fourth best score for her free skate on Saturday. Throughout the weekend, Nagasu continued to put her classic spins on display, earning Level 4 on five of them.

In the men’s event, Adam Rippon, who was in fourth place after the short program, finished there in the free skate in the overall competition. Rippon was involved in a collision prior to his free skate on Saturday with Nan Song of China, but skated and is OK. We wish Song, who was forced to withdraw, a speedy recovery. Rippon earned 205.48 points for the event and will skate next at NHK Trophy in Japan.

In ice dancing, competing for the third time this season, Madison Chock and Evan Bates tied their best placement together at a Grand Prix event, finishing in fourth. The highlight of the weekend for the duo came in the free dance as Chock and Bates earned the highest point total for a single element during the competition, a Level 4 serpentine lift.

Caitlin Yankowskas and Joshua Reagan were scheduled to compete in this event but withdrew due to a rib injury to Reagan.
