Day one at 2012 Cup of China in Shanghai is complete and all four members of Team USA will have a shot at a medal tomorrow. Cup of China is the third of six ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events to take place this season.
In the ladies event, Mirai Nagasu, who opened her season with a third-place finish at Finlandia Trophy, is in the same position after her short program. Skating lively to “Downhill Special” by Benny Goodman, Nagasu opened with a triple toe-triple toe combination which she landed, but the later jump was under-rotated. For Nagasu though, that was her lone mistake. She went on to land a triple loop and a double Axel and finished her program with two Level 4 spins. Her final six elements all earned positive Grades of Execution and she finished with 59.76 points.
In the men’s event, Adam Rippon is into fourth place after the short program. Rippon opened his program with a beautiful Level 4 Camel Spin then executed a triple flip-triple toe combination and ended with a Level 4 step sequence. He earned 71.81 points and is in fourth place, less than two points from third.
In ice dancing, competing for the third time this season, Madison Chock and Evan Bates are into fourth place after the short dance. Skating to selections from Quidam by Cirque du Soleil, Chock and Bates earned 59.26 points in a program that included all five elements receiving a positive GOE and a Level 4 rotational lift.
