2012 Trophée des Champions
The first official match of the season takes place in New York! Three years after its first historic steps on foreign soil, in Montreal in 2009, the Trophée des Champions, which opposes the French Ligue 1 champion against the winner of the Coupe de France, returns to North America, after interim stops in Tunis (2010) and Tangiers (2011).
Being contested in a non-French speaking country for the first time, this 17th edition proposes an unprecedented match up between Montpellier Hérault Sport Club (MHSC) and Olympique Lyonnais (OL). On 20 May 2012, the MHSC became the 19th French champion in history when they lifted the Ligue 1 title, in the process also becoming the 15th club to qualify for the Trophée des Champions. For their debuts in the competition, Montpellier take on the record holders in the discipline. After winning the Ligue 1 title a record seven consecutive times between 2002 and 2008, OL will be taking part in their eighth Trophée des Champions. For the first time, the club from Lyon won their ticket for the season curtain-raiser courtesy of a victory in the Coupe de France final.
Scheduled for 3:00 pm local time (21:00 CET in France), the match will be played in the Red Bull Arena. Inaugurated in March 2010, this purpose-built football stadium is situated just kilometers from Manhattan, in New Jersey. The Red Bull Arena is home to Major League Soccer outfit the New York Red Bulls, and boasts a special relationship with France’s World Cup winning side of 1998.
